Attribution is the process of linking certificates in registry transactions, such as transfers or cancellations, to the trade(s) they belong to.
Every time certificates are issued, transferred or cancelled in a registry, a transaction record is created. Registries don’t hold the contracts behind those movements, so each transaction (for individual certificates or batches) needs to be linked to the relevant trade or trades in the company’s own records. This process is called attribution. An example of attribution is linking an inbound transfer of 700 Guarantees of Origin on the VertiCer registry to the purchase trade those certificates were bought under.
A single transaction can include certificates for several trades, and sometimes the corresponding trade isn’t known or confirmed yet. Attribution restrictions let teams lock part of a transaction’s volume so it can’t be attributed until that is resolved.
Attribution looks at transactions that have already happened, linking the certificates in them to the right trades in the trade book. On the other hand, allocation is the decision about which certificates in inventory will be used to fulfil each delivery obligation. Once allocation is done, the transfer or cancellation can be executed in the registry.
