Post-trade operations

Post-trade operations, in relation to EACs, is the discipline of managing EACs after a buy or sell trade has been agreed.

What does post-trade operations involve?

Post-trade operations covers the full lifecycle of a certificate after the trade is booked: tracking issuance from generators, importing data from registries, reconciling internal records with registry accounts, allocating certificates to delivery obligations, executing transfers and cancellations across the relevant registries, and producing audit-ready evidence of completed deliveries. It is a continuous process rather than a discrete event.

Who owns post-trade operations?

It depends. In smaller firms, traders or originators tend to handle post-trade operations themselves. In larger utilities, it sits with middle office or back office teams, often reporting to a Head of Operations or Head of Middle Office. As volumes grow, dedicated EAC operations teams emerge, sometimes within a broader Energy Operations or Trading Operations function.
